Tech companies and the protection of private data
Tech companies have been in the spotlight after the Supreme Court ‘s decision to overturn abortion rights in the US. This is what is at stake in the dossier which includes an article published in The Guardian in July 2022, an opinion piece from The LA Times written by CC and KB in August 2022 along with a 2018 cartoon released in Cagle.com. It raises the following question: to what extent do tech companies privacy policies protect their users? Examining the role played by these companies and the impact of the Supreme Court’s ruling will shed light on the question
The privacy policy of major tech companies is examined in both articles.in connection with the abolition of the right to have an abortion by the Supreme court in July. In the wake of /this decision women can now be prosecuted for seeking an abortion. The Guardian and The LATimes focus onTech companies such as Google or Facebook which collect information that could be used by law enforcement .
The Guardian highlights the measures recently taken by Google to protect its users’ privacy by deleting information regarding their movements/locations. In sharp contrast, Facebook is accused by the authors of the column of giving information to law enforcement, leading to the prosecution of a young woman trying to get an abortion. The carton sums up the company’s attitude to data protection: indeed the CEO does not seem to care in the least about his users’ privacy.
